What changes during the pattern

Faster, deeper breathing temporarily lowers carbon dioxide; oxygen then gradually falls during retention. Tingling or light-headedness can occur, but neither is a goal or measure of success.

Three rounds are shorter, but the practice remains physiologically intense.

How to prepare

  • Lie down or sit somewhere safe.
  • Relax the exhale rather than forcing empty.
  • End retention at the first clear urge to breathe.
  • Rest or skip the practice when you feel unwell.

Who should not begin without advice

This is an intense practice, not beginner relaxation. If pregnant or living with a significant cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory or other medical condition, ask a qualified clinician before practising.

Common questions

Is a longer hold better?

No. End at the first clear urge to breathe, not at a record.

Is tingling a sign of success?

No. It may occur as breathing changes, but it is not a target.

Does research prove disease treatment?

No. Early small studies do not justify broad therapeutic claims.

Sources and evidence limits

The Kox study involved a small group of healthy volunteers and combined breathing, meditation and cold exposure. It does not show that breathing alone treats disease.
