Why the square works
Four equal phases give attention a predictable sequence. The practice is also called square breathing or 4-4-4-4 breathing.
Shorten every phase equally, or omit the holds, if the pattern creates air hunger.
How to begin gently
- Sit with support and soften your shoulders.
- Keep the inhale quiet rather than maximal.
- Do not force the lungs completely empty.
- Return to natural breathing at the first discomfort.
Who may find it useful
It may suit people who want a brief structure for attention or a calm transition between activities. Beginners can start with an easy 3-3-3-3 count.
